Stu Wylie

Age 35

What do you do when you're off the mat?

I just started going back to school in August. It's keeping me pretty busy, so far so good.

What brought you to BY for the first time?

I had moved back to the area about a year before coming to BY and hadn't been taking very good care of myself when it came to exercise.  I had tried yoga a few years prior, and while I enjoyed it, I didn't stick with it. The studio wasn't far from where I lived, and was my first step towards better health.

What's your favorite thing about the studio?

I really enjoy the community of Brandywine Yoga.  The studio feels special, and for me, that mostly because of the teachers and other yogis.

What's your advice for someone coming to yoga for the very first time?

Don't be too hard on yourself.  Everybody has a first time, and starts from their own place.  Also, stick with it, especially if it's a struggle.  While it might feel awkward and foreign at first, it won't take long to starts seeing and feeling the benefits of yoga.

What has your yoga practice given you?

At first I came for exercise, which yoga has helped a lot with.  I am in probably the best shape of my adult life.  In the long run though, the reason I've stuck with yoga is because of the mindful aspects.  Yoga has given me quite a bit more than that, I could go on for a while, but I'll leave it at that.

What's your favorite pose?

These days my favorite poses are chaturanga into upward facing dog, especially upward facing dog.

What's your least favorite pose?

Seated wide legged forward fold.  I love it as a standing pose, but seated is a struggle.

Tell us something unusual about yourself.

I just started riding horses again for the first time in 15 years.

What three words would your best friend use to describe you?

Patient, steady, reserved

What's your guilty (or not so guilty) pleasure?

Bad 80s/90s action movies

Have you made any big changes in your life since starting your yoga practice?

I just started back to school, which was a big change for me.  Also taking the teacher training at BY was a big deal for me in a great way.  There have been a lot of little changes that have made a big difference too.

If you were having a dinner party and could invite anyone you wanted to, who would you invite?

Eckhart Tolle, Kristen Schaal, David Bowie, David Lynch, and Rhys Darby
